Firescaping’s mission is to provide accessible resources and services to the public, partnering with homeowners and communities to help create more fire resistant homes and neighborhood landscapes.

- Defensible Space Consultations: A personalized wildfire risk evaluation of your home and property, focused on identifying key goals and solutions within your budget.
- Beginning the Collaborative Process: We provide tools and resources to help you start your neighborhood or community fire planning organization.
- Grant-writing: Helping you develop a project, get buy-in from stakeholders, write a proposal and win grant funding.

We provide a Defensible Space Consultation and Wildfire Risk Evaluation program. We don’t call it an “inspection” – the consultation has no legal authority – we conduct evaluations at the request of the homeowner/resident as a public service to provide information and suggestions. Please set aside at least one hour to participate in the consultation.
The Defensible Space Consultation and Wildfire Risk Evaluation:
- Assesses fire risks
- Identifies specific hazards
- Focuses on key values to retain and protect
- Determines specific, realistic goals for hazard mitigation
Defensible Space and Wildfire Risk consultations are conducted by trained staff who all have background as firefighters. Evaluations can currently be scheduled the following counties:
- Alameda
- Contra Costa
- Kern
- Kings
- Los Angeles
- Merced
- Orange
- Sacramento County
- San Joaquin
- Solano
- Stanislaus
Please check back, more counties may be added to our service areas as staffing permits.
There is a modest fee for the service, however, financial hardship should not prevent anyone from having access to this program. We currently have funding to cover providing Evaluations at no fee to individuals without the means to pay for the service. Shared Risk. Common Goals. Community Fire Planning.
Numerous entities exist around the state to provide the public with support in developing community fire planning organizations. Firescaping seeks to support existing processes by connecting interested individuals with the resources, and assist local leaders with planning and strategizing to assist them in achieving their goals.
Please contact Firescaping for assistance with:
- Membership growth, ensuring broad representation, and retention
- Facilitating an effective collaborative process
- Meeting Design
- Incorporation, getting nonprofit status, articles of incorporation, etc
- Outreach and Advertising
- Developing fire risk abatement projects
- Creating a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP)
- Planning a course towards becoming a recognized Firewise Community
Coaching can be scheduled over the phone, via email, or in person in select areas of California. In person coaching can currently be scheduled in the following counties:

Targeted Projects. Effective Proposals. Successfully Funded Grants.
Get grant-writing tips and support from experienced writers with a proven track record of writing successful grant proposals. There is a lot of information available on how to write effective grants, including workshops, courses, books, and literature. Despite all of the resources available, a third of grant applications received at the Fire Safe California Grants Clearing House are rejected because of errors in the application.
Tired of information overload? Let us guide you through the grant-writing process. Grant-writing assistance is provided by writers who have successfully won hundreds of thousands of dollars of grant funding.

There are fees associated with this service. However, we utilize a sliding scale with variable costs for grant-writing assistance based on an organization’s ability to pay. Please contact the grant-writing coordinator for more information.
